Level 1 – Normative is about Strategic honesty; what business we are in or think we are in is paramount to visualizing and describing the current status.
The most common use of a Normative Framework gives a starting point for developing an updated version of an existing business or group of procedures.
Once we create the Framework, we can apply logic to perform additional framework analysis. We make no claim or seek ultimate perfection in a framework because the model’s integrity is relative to the assumptions we have made in creating the Framework.
Level 1 is a series of feasibility studies to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of an existing business or proposed venture, the opportunities and threats present, the resources required to carry through, and determine the prospects objectively and rationally for success.
The Framework standardizes terminology, highlighting existing and re-specifying issues and activities that must be re-examined and re-specified.
Tracing the business view through its enabling processes allows all areas of managed entities to be aligned for inclusion and completeness in covering issues that make something a “solution.”
A Solution Framework provides a standing reference for recognizing when and how something qualifies unambiguously as a solution.
For many, Level 1 Normative Frameworks using the normative rules will be sufficient to sort through ideas without constricting to trying to make sense of existing organizational charts or process flow charts. Level 1 says these tried and true “rules” work for many businesses. Use them to get started. The “rules” associated with business questions and their answers allow you to build (with the aid of a structural framework) an initial business model. The business the business is in.
